Job Purpose
The Elders Support Coordinator is responsible for supporting and enhancing the well-being of Elders who are Saulteau First Nations members, both on and off reserve. This role involves organizing friendly visits, providing or organizing transportation to events, meetings, and workshops, and acting as a liaison between Elders, the SFN departments and other organizations as needed. The Elders Support Coordinator will ensure that Elders are connected, supported, and engaged in cultural, social, recreational, and community activities.
Duties and Responsibilities
Elder Support & Engagement
- Build and maintain relationships with Elders both on and off reserve through regular check-ins and friendly visits.
- Provide companionship and emotional support to Elders, ensuring they feel valued and included.
- Organize and coordinate Elder-specific programs, gatherings, and activities to encourage social engagement and cultural connection.
- Assist with the organization of Elders home maintenance and routine seasonal tasks.
Transportation & Accessibility
- Arrange and provide transportation for Elders to and from community events, meetings, workshops, and appointments as needed.
- Ensure that transportation services are safe, reliable, and respectful of the needs of Elders.
Liaison & Advocacy
- Serve as the main point of contact between Elders and SFN departments, advocating for their needs and ensuring they receive necessary services.
- Facilitate communication between Elders and leadership, health services, housing, social programs, and other relevant entities and organizations.
- Assist Elders in accessing community resources, government programs, and health services.
Event & Workshop Coordination
- Plan, organize, and support Elder participation in cultural events, ceremonies, and workshops.
- Collaborate with departments to ensure Elders are included in community initiatives.
- Work with local organizations to create opportunities that support Elder wellness and cultural preservation.
Administration & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of services provided, including transportation logs, visits, and program participation.
- Prepare reports and updates for leadership on Elder engagement and needs.
- Develop and manage a budget for Elder-related activities and transportation services, if applicable.
Qualifications and Skills
- Experience working with Elders in an Indigenous community or support setting.
- Experience in social work, community support, or a related field.
- Knowledge of government programs and all local services available to Elders.
- Familiarity with Saulteau First Nations community members and traditions.
- Understanding of Cree Language or desire to learn
- Strong understanding and respect for Saulteau First Nations culture, traditions, and values.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and meaningful relationships.
- Organizational and coordination skills to manage transportation, visits, and event planning.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other departments, community members and other community organizations.
- A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
Work Conditions
- Work is performed primarily in the office with hours of work set as 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
- Travel may be required within SFN community and surrounding community.
- Some evening and weekend work may be necessary.
- Wage Range: $24.12- $27.74 /HR
