Job Purpose

The Youth Support Coordinator is responsible for engaging and supporting Saulteau First Nations youth by encouraging participation in community programs, workshops, and cultural initiatives. This role involves working closely with youth to ensure their voices are heard in Nation planning, cultural revitalization, and traditional learning opportunities. The Youth Support Coordinator will serve as a bridge between youth and leadership, advocating for youth needs while fostering a sense of belonging, cultural pride, and empowerment within the community.

Duties and Responsibilities

Youth Engagement & Outreach

  • Develop and implement strategies to attract more youth to participate in Nation programs, workshops, and events.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with youth through regular engagement, outreach, and mentorship.
  • Act as a role model and mentor, inspiring youth to embrace their cultural identity and actively participate in community life.

Program & Event Support

  • Assist in planning, promoting, and facilitating youth-focused programs, workshops, and cultural activities.
  • Gather feedback from youth to ensure programs align with their interests, needs, and aspirations.
  • Collaborate with other SFN departments and community organizations to develop initiatives that support youth development, wellness, and leadership.

Cultural Revitalization & Traditional Learning

  • Work with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community leaders to incorporate traditional teachings, language, and cultural practices into youth programs.
  • Support efforts in cultural revitalization by encouraging youth participation in ceremonies, land-based learning, and traditional skills workshops.
  • Assist in organizing cultural camps, storytelling sessions, and other initiatives that strengthen youth connections to their heritage.

Advocacy & Youth Voice

  • Represent youth perspectives in planning discussions, ensuring their needs and ideas are considered in decision-making processes.
  • Act as a liaison between youth, leadership, Elders, and various departments to foster collaboration and understanding.
  • Advocate for resources, opportunities, and supports that contribute to youth empowerment and well-being.

Communication & Administration

  • Maintain regular communication with youth through social media, newsletters, and other outreach methods.
  • Keep records of youth participation, feedback, and program success stories.
  • Prepare reports and recommendations for leadership on youth engagement strategies and priorities.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong understanding of Saulteau First Nations culture, traditions, and the challenges faced by First Nations youth.
  • Experience in youth work, community development, education, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of First Nations governance, policies, and community resources.
  • Familiarity with Saulteau First Nations languages, customs, and traditions.
  • Passionate about youth empowerment, mentorship, and cultural revitalization.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with youth and community members.
  • Experience in youth programming, event coordination, or community engagement.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Elders, leadership, and other departments.
  • Social media and outreach skills to effectively engage youth.
  • A valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.

Work Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in the office with hours of work set as 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
  • Travel may be required within SFN community and surrounding community.
  • Some evening and weekend work may be necessary.
  • Wage Range: $24.12- $27.74 /HR
