Overview
The FPC plays a vital role in designing, coordinating, and delivering community-driven programs that support the revitalization of Saulteau First Nations languages, culture, heritage, and wellness. This role combines hands-on program facilitation with in depth planning, ensuring the continued growth and intergenerational transfer of cultural knowledge, healing practices, and language fluency. Rooted in SFN values, this position supports individuals, families, and the broader community to thrive through meaningful cultural connection. The FPC will work closely with the Culture Coordinators from all departments, the Cultural Committee, the Elders Support Coordinator and the Youth Support Coordinator.
Duties and Responsibilities
Language Revitalization
- Coordinate language programs, including classes, immersion camps, mentorships, and material development.
- Collaborate with Elders and fluent speakers to ensure accurate, culturally relevant teaching resources.
- Promote language visibility in schools, signage, and digital spaces (apps, podcasts, etc.).
- Support intergenerational learning of SFN languages through storytelling and traditional knowledge sharing.
Cultural Programming & Revitalization
- Design and facilitate age-appropriate, land-based, and seasonal programs reflecting traditional skills such as hunting, fishing, gathering, horsemanship, hide tanning, medicine gathering, and survival.
- Organize community cultural events such as storytelling circles, arts workshops, drum-making, smudging, singing and traditional dances.
- Integrate cultural teachings in partnership with schools and youth organizations.
- Ensure programming aligns with traditional teachings, protocols, and community input.
Heritage Protection
- Support heritage mapping and documentation in partnership with other SFN departments.
- Assist in the restoration and protection of sacred and historical sites.
- Contribute to the development of traditional knowledge protection protocols.
- Build relationships with museums and archives to advocate for repatriation and accurate representation of SFN heritage.
Community Wellness & Healing
- Collaborate with the Health Department and Wellness Team to assist in delivering culturally grounded mental health and healing initiatives.
- Help organize and facilitate wellness workshops and land-based healing programs (e.g., sweat lodge, medicine walks, drumming therapy).
- Provide support to community members unable to harvest or participate independently.
- Promote traditional knowledge as a wellness pathway through intergenerational learning and connection to the land.
Program Administration
- Create monthly program calendars and ensure they align with other SFN departments and events.
- Manage program budgets, track attendance, prepare monthly reports, and support funding proposals.
- Maintain accurate documentation including consent forms and evaluation tools.
- Incorporate community feedback into future programming through engagement sessions.
- Support grant writing, sponsorship opportunities, and reporting requirements.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum 2-year diploma or degree in Social Work, Human Services, Indigenous Studies, Education, or related field; OR equivalent experience in community program coordination.
- Strong understanding of Saulteau First Nations culture, traditions, language, and wellness practices.
- Fluency or working knowledge of SFN languages.
- Experience in Indigenous education, heritage conservation, or healing-focused programming.
- Experience developing and facilitating culturally based programming.
- Familiarity with traditional protocols and teachings.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Physically able to participate in land-based activities.
- Valid BC Driver’s License with clean driver’s abstract.
- Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check.
Ideal Skills & Qualifications
- Grant writing and budget management experience.
- Life skills or coaching training.
Work Conditions
- Primarily Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, with frequent evening and weekend activities dependent upon programming.
- Travel within the SFN community and surrounding areas for outreach and land-based events.
- Outdoor and physical work required in all seasons.
- Overtime must be pre-approved by the immediate supervisor.
- This position is dependent on continued program funding.
- Salary range: $ 71,444.56-$86,485.52
