SFN Land guardian- Seasonal Position

Saulteau First Nations is seeking to employ 1 land guardian in our traditional territory.  The Nation is implementing management and research in support of Caribou Partnership Agreement; an agreement between the two Nations, British Columbia, and Canada. The Treaty Rights and Environmental Protection department (TREP) has initiated the program this year as part of an ongoing program. The TREP coordinator will help direct the guardian to monitor 5 studies ongoing this year. The Land Guardian will work with the TREP Aboriginal Liaison Program. Additional instruction will be provided from the University of Northern B.C and Northern Alberta Institute of Technology here in Moberly. The following studies are;

  • Moberly Lake Fish Methyl-Mercury Study
  • Moose and Grouse Surveys
  • Lichen collection and scoping
  • SFN Cultural Sharing
  • Plant /Habitat Identification and restoration
  • Water testing


Specific work site:
Moberly Lake and Murray Watershed

Shift: 4 Days a week - May 17 through to September (including some weekends)

 

Description of work:
Collect biological samples of fish, moose scat and water. Fish and set nets, collect lichen and properly dry it. Find plant and plant communities for collection. Enter data onto IPad in the correct format as instructed daily. Be able to drive on forest service roads and take specific instructions. Report illegal activities to the conservation office.

Duties

  • Be able to operate a boat alone fishing in Moberly Lake
  • The collection of data (e.g., fish tissue, fecal pellets, water samples) into a technical format
  • Drive to various sites with a cargo trailer
  • Drive an UTV


Qualifications

  • Valid BC driver’s license and abstract, and access to a vehicle for travel to and from the TREP department
  • Level 1 First Aid or higher
  • Training in the use of radios, Spot messenger, InReach, remote telemetry equipment, and trail cameras
  • Boat Operators License
  • Training in the proper use of all data collection forms
  • SFN will provide necessary PPE
  • Have a helmet for use if/while operating off-road vehicles
