Overview

The FireSmart & Cultural Fire Coordinator supports Saulteau First Nations in wildfire preparedness, prevention, mitigation, and community education. You work closely with community members, partner agencies, and leadership to reduce wildfire risk to homes, infrastructure, and culturally significant lands. This role supports FireSmart initiatives, emergency preparedness planning, and collaborative wildfire mitigation efforts while respecting culturally appropriate land stewardship practices.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct FireSmart Home Ignition Zone Assessments, Critical Infrastructure Assessments, and Neighbourhood Wildfire Hazard Assessments
  • Deliver FireSmart education and awareness presentations to community members, schools, and local groups
  • Organize and participate in community outreach events such as Wildfire Community Preparedness Day, emergency preparedness fairs, farmers markets, sporting events, and school presentations
  • Provide guidance and assistance to residents and community groups to support FireSmart mitigation activities on residential and community lands
  • Assist with the maintenance, implementation, and ongoing support of the Saulteau First Nations Emergency Response Plan
  • Work in coordination and facilitation with BC Wildfire Service representatives in the development and implementation of prescribed burn plans
  • Work collaboratively with local Fire Keepers to support and facilitate cultural burns within Saulteau First Nations reserve territory
  • Coordinate with the Moberly Lake Volunteer Fire Department on initiatives related to home fire safety, public education, and structural fire mitigation
  • Support alignment between FireSmart initiatives, emergency preparedness planning, and culturally appropriate land stewardship practices
  • Participate in required training, certifications, and professional development
  • Travel and work in rural and remote areas as required
  • Perform other related duties as required

Ideal Qualifications and Experience

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
  • Post Secondary diploma or certification related to public safety or emergency response.
  • 2+ Years experience in structural or wildfire mitigation or response
  • Knowledge of public safety education and or emergency preparedness programs
  • Completion of FireSmart 101 and Wildfire Risk Reduction training, or willingness to obtain
  • Local FireSmart Representative qualification or willingness to attain
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence
  • Ability to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • Experience with FireSmart, wildfire mitigation, or emergency preparedness is an asset
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities is an asset

  • Knowledge of wildfire risk reduction and mitigation strategies

  • Cultural awareness and respect for Saulteau First Nations values, traditions, and land stewardship practices
  • Strong organization and time-management skills
  • Physical ability to perform outdoor and manual work in varying weather and terrain

Work Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in the office Monday to Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Travel may be required within SFN community and surrounding community.
  • Some outdoor and physical work is required, including walking uneven terrain and working in variable weather conditions.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Wage Range: $32.26-$35.33 /Hr
