Overview
The Public Works Supervisor is a working supervisor responsible for the day-to-day delivery of public works services. This role leads daily operations, assigns and schedules work, responds to operational issues, and works alongside staff as required. The position ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with approved plans, budgets, and standard.
Duties and Responsibilities
Daily Operations and Supervision
- Plan, assign, and supervise daily public works activities with input from the manager as needed
- Prepare and adjust staff schedules based on priorities, weather, and operational needs
- Work alongside crews as required to support service delivery
- Ensure work orders and inspections are documented and completed accurately and on time
Public Works Service Delivery
- Oversee day-to-day operations related to roads, water, sewer, equipment, grounds, pit operations, and seasonal services
- Coordinate and respond to emergencies and urgent maintenance issues
- Ensure safe operation and maintenance of tools, vehicles, and equipment
Staff Leadership and Coordination
- Provide hands-on supervision, instruction, and coaching to crew
- Holds regular “toolbox” coordination meetings with crew
- Monitor attendance, timekeeping, and daily productivity
- Provide input into hiring, training, performance management, and corrective actions
- Promote a strong safety culture and positive team environment
Operational Coordination
- Coordinate operational resources as required for daily work and ensure proper material storage
- Communicate operational needs and emerging issues to the Operations Manager
- Ensure accurate documentation and reporting of completed work
Compliance and Safety
- Ensure work is performed in accordance with policies, safety standards, and procedures
- Participate in safety inspections
- Identify hazards and mitigate risks as required
- Support compliance with applicable operational and regulatory requirements
Required Qualifications
- Relevant trade certification or equivalent hands-on public works experience
- Demonstrated experience supervising or leading crews in a working environment
- Strong knowledge of public works operations and maintenance activities
- Ability to plan, prioritize, and adapt to changing daily demands
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Experience working in or with First Nations communities is an asset
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to solve problems, make effective decisions, resolve conflicts, and manage time effectively.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams)
- Valid BC Driver’s License and the ability to provide a satisfactory Criminal Records Check.
Work Conditions
- Work is performed primarily during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursdays.
- On-call or emergency response may be required
- Travel will be required within SFN community and surrounding community.
- Wage Range: $35.83-$40.72/ Hr
