Job Purpose

The Casual On-Call Daycare Assistant provides support to Early Childhood Educators and assists with the care, supervision and development of children ages 0–6 years in a safe, inclusive and play-based environment. This position provides casual coverage across childcare programs based on staffing and operational needs and works under the direction of Early Childhood Educators and the Childcare Centre Supervisor.

Duties & Responsibilities

Early Childhood Centre Support

  • Assists small groups and individual children with development and learning in a play-based environment, as directed by Early Childhood Educators.
  • Assists children with the development of life skills and participation in daily activities.
  • Assists with program preparation and classroom activities.
  • Supports the planning and implementation of activities, special events and programming within the childcare centre.
  • Provides classroom and program coverage as required based on staffing and operational needs.
  • Maintains a safe and supportive environment and provides appropriate supervision of children.
  • Assists with the planning, preparation and serving of nutritious meals and snacks in accordance with FoodSafe requirements, including clean-up.
  • Assists with daily cleaning and sanitization of the childcare centre.
  • Supports children during indoor and outdoor activities, field trips and land-based programming.
  • Works collaboratively with Early Childhood Educators and other childcare staff to support the needs of children and the program.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Ideal Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum 19 years of age.
  • Experience working with children between the ages of 0–6 years is an asset.
  • Early Childhood Educator Assistant (ECEA) certification is an asset.
  • Routine immunizations according to the BC immunization schedule are recommended.
  • Responsible Adult 20-hour course is required and must be completed prior to working directly with children. SFN will cover the cost of the course for successful candidates who require it.
  • Valid Child Safe Certificate or willingness to obtain.
  • Valid Food Safe certification is an asset.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector.

Ideal Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Reliable and responsible with the ability to respond to casual on-call staffing needs.
  • Knowledge of Saulteau First Nations community history, language, traditions and culture is an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and successfully interact with a variety of personality types.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality when handling information.
  • Ability to provide and promote positive values and social development.
  • Ability to provide a positive and supportive environment for children.

Work Conditions

  • This is a casual on-call position with no guaranteed hours. Hours of work will vary depending on staffing and operational needs.
  • Work is performed at Cree-Ative Wonders Daycare, the Land-Based Learning Cabin and grounds, and other childcare program locations as required.
  • Outdoor supervision of children is required in varying weather conditions.
  • Periodic travel may be required for field trips, training or other work-related activities.
  • Lifting or moving up to 40 lbs may be required.
  • Wage Range: $22.35-$24.48
