Job Purpose
The Apprentice Plumber contributes to the success of Saulteau First Nations (SFN) by supporting the maintenance and improvement of SFN infrastructure under the supervision of a certified Journeyman Plumber. This role focuses on learning the plumbing trade through hands-on experience while assisting with work in community homes and civic buildings. This position supports the health, safety, and well-being of the community while working toward full certification.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing systems in residential and civic buildings under the direction of a certified Journeyman Plumber.
- Support troubleshooting of plumbing issues and help complete repairs in a timely manner.
- Carry, load, and organize tools, equipment, and materials needed for daily tasks.
- Properly use, maintain, and care for hand and power tools, and immediately report any damaged or unsafe equipment.
- Perform basic plumbing tasks such as pipe cutting, fitting, fixture installation, and drain maintenance as skills develop.
- Participate in routine inspections and preventive maintenance of plumbing systems.
- Respond to emergency plumbing calls with the Journeyman Plumber as required.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.
- Participate in weekly work planning meetings with the Maintenance Team.
- Follow approved safety procedures and only perform work you are trained and authorized to complete.
- Comply with SFN safety policies, WorkSafeBC regulations, and WHMIS procedures.
- Conduct safety checks of work areas and report hazards to the Supervisor.
- Keep work areas clean, organized, and presentable.
- Assist with maintaining the work order and maintenance scheduling system.
- Participate in SFN community events as required.
- Represent SFN in a respectful and professional manner when working in community homes.
- Maintain confidentiality when working in occupied residences.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications and Skills
- Registered or willing to register as a Plumbing Apprentice in British Columbia.
- Actively participate in on-the-job training and required in-school apprenticeship training.
- Track and report apprenticeship hours as required by SkilledTradesBC.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic mechanical ability and interest in the plumbing trade.
- Willingness to learn, follow direction, and work safely at all times.
- Ability to manage time, follow schedules, and complete tasks as assigned.
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
- Basic computer skills for work order tracking and reporting.
- Safety training such as WHMIS and First Aid is an asset.
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License or willingness to obtain.
- Satisfactory criminal records check.
Work Conditions
- Work is performed primarily during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
- Occasional overtime may be required.
- Travel may be required within SFN community and surrounding community.
- Physical work including lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions
- Ability to kneel, crouch, climb ladders, work in tight spaces, stand for extended periods, and walk on uneven ground.
- Wage Range: $29.60-$34.04/Hr
