Overview

The Carpenter / Maintenance Worker supports the repair, renovation, maintenance, and general upkeep of Saulteau First Nations homes, housing units, facilities, and community infrastructure. The position performs a variety of carpentry and maintenance duties while assisting with day-to-day operational and housing-related projects.

This role is intended to provide flexibility in recruitment by welcoming candidates with general carpentry, renovation, maintenance, or construction experience. Saulteau First Nations supports ongoing learning and may provide opportunities for apprenticeship or professional development for the right candidate.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with construction, renovation, and maintenance projects for the Housing Department.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other departments including Public Works and Facilities Maintenance.
  • Build and repair decks, stairs, railings, and other exterior structures.
  • Assist with roofing installation, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Install vinyl flooring, baseboards, trim, doors, and other finishing materials.
  • Support kitchen and bathroom renovations and upgrades.
  • Complete small drywall repairs, patching, mudding, sanding, and finishing.
  • Perform interior and exterior painting and touch-up work.
  • Complete general repairs, preventative maintenance, and upkeep on Nation-owned homes and facilities.
  • Receive and complete daily work orders and provide updates on project progress.
  • Support tenant-related maintenance requests and emergency repairs as required.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, and maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
  • Maintain clean, safe, and organized worksites and storage areas.
  • Identify material and supply needs and communicate them to the supervisor.
  • Follow all workplace safety procedures, policies, and WorkSafeBC regulations.
  • Work collaboratively with the Red Seal Carpenter, Housing Department staff, contractors, and community members.
  • Participate in department meetings, safety training, and professional development opportunities.
  • Participate in community events or departmental initiatives as required.
  • Any other duties as required.

Ideal Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum 1–3 years of experience in carpentry, construction, renovations, building maintenance, or a related field preferred.
  • Apprenticeship training or carpentry certification considered an asset.
  • Experience using carpentry and maintenance tools and equipment safely.
  • Experience completing minor repairs and maintenance independently.
  • Valid Class 5 or Novice (N) Driver’s Licence required.
  • Ability to provide and maintain a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract.
  • Occupational First Aid, WHMIS, Fall Protection, or other safety certifications considered assets.
  • Experience working within or alongside First Nations communities considered an asset.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

  • Physically capable of performing demanding labour and lifting materials.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety standards and safe work procedures.
  • High level of professionalism, reliability, and accountability.

Work Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily Monday to Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and may include indoor and outdoor work.
  • Travel may be required within the SFN community and surrounding areas.
  • Occasional overtime or emergency response work may be required.
  • Lifting, climbing, bending, and physically demanding work are required.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, noise, and construction environments may occur.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
