Recent outbreaks of the Measles Virus in northern Alberta have raised concerns about the presence of the virus. With some basic information and preventative steps – you can help keep your loved ones safe and healthy!
Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus – most common symptoms include fever, runny nose, cough, watery eyes, and eventually a dusky red, blotchy rash that begins on the face and spreads throughout the body. Measles spreads though airborne droplets that have been coughed, sneezed, or breathed out by an infected person. Measles can also spread through direct contact with the nose or throat fluids of an infected person – making caregivers vulnerable.
While more common complications include ear infections or pneumonia – more severe complications can include Measles Encephalitis (swelling of the bran), severe respiratory complications, and even death, occurring in 1 of every 3,000 cases (http://www.bccdc.ca/health-info/diseases-conditions/measles).
Children under the age of 5, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant persons are all more vulnerable to severe complications.
